This spring we are exploring through a series of dialogues, works that our members are making today that engage plastics as a material for reuse, research, and aesthetic inquiry. Artists invited are included in the upcoming ecoartspace book titled Wicked Monstrous, that will launch fall 2026.

For this fifth Dialogue, we will hear from six artists who are making wearables and participating in eco fashion shows to highlight the devastating impacts the clothing industry has on the natural environment, including: Aurora Robson, lead artist for Plastic Vortex and juror for the Wicked Monstrous upcoming book who will present her upcycled plastic headwear, Alanna Baird and her Future Oceans Series including high fashion wearables, Johanna Törnqvist and adornments from her Side Effect Series made with discarded blisterpacks, Kalliopi Monoyios and her ongoing Weight of Our Possessions Series incorporating a wide range of disposable materials, Nicole Dextras and her most recent Red Bio-Jacket, and Sari Nordman and her performative wearable anxiety tapestries.

There will be a single shared screen presenting the artists work who will have approximately 8 minutes to respond, and Q&A with audience participation to follow.

Presenters

Aurora Robson is predominantly known for her work with plastic waste. She has studied structural metal welding, worked in film, construction, and entertainment. She has developed many ways to sculpt with plastic debris, including fastening, weaving, sewing, ultrasonic welding, injection welding, and 3-D printing. www.instagram.com/aurorarobson

Alanna Baird lives in St. Andrews, NB, Canada. There the evidence and impact of human existance is exposed by the receding tides. She receives gifts from her daily walks on the floor of the sea, gathering inspiration and ideas. She began working with recycled metals in1991, and is currently exploring plastics. www.tinfish.ca/work/wearable-art

Johanna Törnqvist is refining waste, pleated and stitched together with the same precision as haute couture to make a statement about our daily consumption and to arouse questions about sustainability and environmental issues.With her work she also wants to make a contribution to the ongoing debate about the unsustainable fashion industry. www.johannatornqvist.com

Kalliopi Monoyios’ sculpture and fiber-based works engage with materials that are discarded or overlooked by consumers in America. She pairs these “worthless” items with time- and labor-intensive practices that have ceased to be practical in our capitalist society to pose critical questions about what we value and why. www.kalliopimonoyios.com

Nicole Dextras makes wearable art with biomaterials to incentivize the slow fashion movement. She works across diverse mediums, blending textile arts, natural materials, performance, photography, and film, to create ephemeral installations and social interventions. www.instagram.com/ndextras

Sari Nordman has been developing her Anxiety work since 2022, which transform ecological anxiety into a material, shared experience. The project includes public art installations, wall hangings, wearable tapestries, and mixed media works. https://sarinordman.com

Participants from the Winter/Spring 2026 Sustain(ability) & the Art Studio course will give presentations of their projects for interested members. You can also sign up for the Fall 2026 session, which will be held on Zoom October through December.

This was the eight course designed exclusively for ecoartspace members guiding artists to develop ways of thinking about sustainability in their practice, both conceptually and physically. Participants learned how to wildcraft art materials, a practice that requires one to deepen in their relationship with land, creativity, and self. Additionally, this iteration emphasized connection with the social sphere in one’s eco-art practice. Through lectures, discussions, self-guided creative research, and class presentations, participants were invited to think critically about how their practice engages place, materiality, and voice in a time of socio-ecological destabilization. Join us to witness their journey way-finding a meaningful practice grounded in bioregional artistic research.
